Personal Statement

Having completed my junior college education at xxxxxxxxxxxxUniversity, I wish to apply to your esteemed university for an undergraduate program in accounting and finances and other relevant subjects, a desire which I have cherished for a long time.

An accident which resulted in a comminuted fracture in my right hand several months before the nationwide University Entrance Examinations affected my preparations for the exam and, to my regret, disqualified me for an undergraduate program. Junior college study became my only choice. I chose to major in English language, realizing that by developing my competence in English language I can lay a good foundation for learning other subjects. During the 2-year program, by studying hard, I improved my scholastic ranking from the top 10 to the top 5 of the whole class, eventually ranking third. I regard my diligence as the key for this progress since I was poorly founded in English when I entered the college.

Besides English, I am very interested in accounting. I have conducted systematic self-study of all the major courses prescribed in the National Self-Study Examination Program and so far have passed the exams of Fundamental Accounting, Financial Management, Marketing and Cost Accounting. At present, I am studying Management Accounting and Advanced Financial Accounting and related courses. To prepare for those exams, I audited many courses offered by the Department of Accounting and read a few textbooks in English such as the Financial Accounting, Finance in a textbook series by ACCA.

In 19-- , I found employment with xxxxx Company Ltd. Due to my accounting background, my responsibilities involve a certain amount of accounting work and this has helped me gain practical experience in accounting. Yet I realize my knowledge in this field is far from enough. Many businesses and industries will have to be internationalized with China‘s entry into WTO. So will accounting and financing. This has bred in me the idea of furthering my studies in Britain.

It is challenging to study abroad, but I have confidence in myself. As I was a science student in senior middle school, I have a sound foundation in mathematics. Moreover, as I have been an English major, I am competent English listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. I will not have any difficulty communicating in English, which can be my advantage.

As for as my study plan, I hope your university will offer systematic and professional trainings to enable me to have better command of the basics in accounting and finance theory as well as the links between accounting & finances and management. I will also take an active part in various activities and try to get a better understanding of the roles that accounting and finance play in British society. By developing a first-hand experience and learning advanced knowledge, I can apply them to solve the problems in the rapidly changing accounting and finance sector in China. Upon graduation from your university, I will return to my country and seek a career in an international company for two or three years. After that, I will go on to pursue an MBA program in Britain or in the United States. All these will be important for a successful lifelong career and your favorable consideration of my application will be the first step in my long journey toward the realization of my career objectives.
